The Google Science Fair is an online global competition for 13-18 year olds that inspires teens to solve real-world problems through the application of science, technology, engineering and math. This year, students will be competing for a $50,000 grand prize scholarship along with exciting travel prizes from our co-sponsors LEGO Education, National Geographic, Scientific American and Virgin Galactic. You can find more inspiration and support on the website at www.googlesciencefair.com. The competition is open until December 12, 2018.
The public is invited to this FREE lecture at ASU:
"The Emergence of Planetary Intelligence: Astrobiology and the Anthropocene Earth” by Dr. David Grinspoon Dr. Grinspoon will put the current human-dominated phase of our planet’s life into a broader context, juxtaposed against previous geological eras in Earth’s history, as well as what’s known from studying changes on other planets. The goal is to better understand the essence of our current moment in geological time and what it means for intelligent life in the universe and for the future of our civilization. Biography: Dr. David Grinspoon is an astrobiologist, award-winning science communicator, and prize-winning author, as well as a frequent advisor to NASA on space exploration strategy. He is a Senior Scientist at the Planetary Science Institute. This is the 2018 Eugene Shoemaker Memorial Lecture, by The Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 7pm Marston Exploration Theater, 781 South Terrace Road, Tempe, AZ 85281 Register for your FREE ticket at www.eventbrite.com/e/2018-eugene-shoemaker-memorial-lecture-with-dr-david-grinspoon-tickets-49349025263 Sep 26 2018

The ASU Preparatory Academy Network of schools invite our students to apply for a special summer experience in partnership with NASA eClips and Arizona State University. Students from all ASU Prep campuses, ASU Prep Casa Grande, Digital, Phoenix, Polytechnic, South Phoenix, and Tempe have the opportunity to work together to create videos that may be featured on NASA's website. The goal is for students to develop high-quality videos that will help students from all over the world uncover misconceptions about the moon. What are the requirements for the experience?
What are the benefits of participating in the experience?
Application Process To apply for the NASA eClips Summer Experience, please send an email with the following application information attached to [email protected] by Tuesday, May 15 at 11:59 pm. Selected students will be notified by Friday, May 18. Link to application: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1fnbNdKYC2HISNNyeGWAEPGQRCGeAcIEY Earth and Space Exploration day is a FREE annual fall event hosted by the School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) on ASU’s Tempe campus inside/outside ISTB 4. The SESE community offers special science-related activities from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. for students age five and up, families, educators and anyone interested in exploring Earth and space.

But how can we separate fact from fiction, when many bizarre Sci-Fi ideas later turn out to be correct? The annual Sci-Fi Meets Sci-Fact lecture is a fun evening of information and entertainment that addresses the burning question - Can it really be done? This lecture is suited for the young, and the young at heart.
Abstract: Our grand problems demand a scale as large as our planet, and indeed, larger. Climate change. Pollution. Depleted resources. Population and how to support it. Two areas of technology promise help: the industrialization of the solar system, and geoengineering. Both need new technologies and management, but especially, vision. Biography: Gregory Benford is a professor of physics at the University of California, Irvine. He is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, was Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University, and in 1995 received the Lord Prize for contributions to science. He directed the UCI plasma lab for two decades and performed the first sail stability experiments there in the early 2000s. He published several hundred scientific papers in several fields Attendees will spend the day working on some of our most innovative lab activities alongside Society of Physics Student members. Breakfast and lunch are included!
As I’m sure you’ve heard by now we’re expecting a very exciting event -- the Great American Solar Eclipse on August 21st! While we will not experience a total solar eclipse we will see a 63% eclipse, which means the moon will cover about 63% of the sun.
For percentages at various zip codes check out this website (ASU Prep's zipcode is 85212): www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/7/25/16019892/solar-eclipse-2017-interactive-map Here is the information about the exact times for Phoenix: www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/usa/phoenix Even with a partial solar eclipse, it is extremely important that you take safety precautions.

"features engineering students who took physics from modelers at Estrella Mountain Community College and are using their knowledge to make prosthetics for folks in need. They are currently working on a prosthetic finger and a leg..."
View the video of Maricopa Now! at this URL: www.maricopa.edu/mctv/maricopa-now This heartwarming story of a little boy trying out his new prosthetic hand is in the first 4 minutes. It brought tears of joy to my eyes, as I saw the child's delight in his new ability to pick things up with his bright green hand. -- Jane J Background: Engineering students at Estrella Mountain Community College use Modeling Instruction in their physics courses, taught by Dwain Desbien and/or David Weaver. David Weaver added, "Some of these students also had Angela McClure (MNS degree from ASU and modeling leader) for physics. With Russ Shaffer and Levi Torrison (chem modelers) teaching at EMCC, we are the nexus of Community College modeling in AZ. We also have a couple of biologists who have explored modeling and are using elements of it in their classes." (Maricopa Now! is the Official Monthly T.V. Magazine Show of the Maricopa Community Colleges.) |
